Church of Saint Mary of the Bridge
The medieval Church of Saint Mary of the Bridge is located downstream from the village of Saint Mary of the Bridge, following the river of Aterno-Pescara. The church is very interesting from an artistic and architectonic point of view, due to its irregular and asymmetrical structure. Its origin is uncertain; the church probably has monastic origins and it could have been built on the ruins of a pagan temple, around the V-VI century. The church was modified many times in the past and also enlarged. Of the first building structure, only the bottom walls and the apse are left. The high altar was realised in XIV century and is one of the few XIV- century high altars perfectly preserved. It is composed of marble plates. Of the same period is also the steeple and other altars inside the church. In XVIII century an oratory was added on the right aisle of the church and it was fully frescoed. The Church was initially included in the Municipality of Fontecchio, but from XX century, it passed to the Municipality of Tione degli Abruzzi due to its proximity to this one.
