Idrija to host the 17th Conference of The International Bobbin and Needle Lace Organisation

Delegation of Idrija Municipality has made a successful bid for organisation of the 17th World Lace Congress, which will be held in 2016. It is expected that over a thousand lace makers from 36 countries will attend the congress. At the International Bobbin and Needle Lace Organisation (OIDFA) Council meeting in Caen 20 members supported Idrija and 18 members supported Hamburg as the next Congress organiser.

The town of Idrija in Slovenia has a long tradition of lace making dating back to 1696. In 19th Century the lace from Idrija found its way to wealthier classes of Western and Northern Europe. First lace school was established already in 1876 and the knowledge of Idrija lace making spread to surrounding regions. Idrija still lives with its lace making heritage and is carrying on with designing, marketing and selling lace and lace products. It is a shining example of preserving and utilising its rich cultural heritage.
