The International Year of Forests (2011) and charcoal-burning in western part of Slovenia
The book on charcoal-burning
United Nations declared 2011 the in order to strengthen global efforts to improve the state of forests. United Nations Forum on Forests, established in 2000, adopted four global objectives which focus on reversing forest loss, enhancing forest-based benefits, increasing sustainably managed forests and mobilizing financial resources.
There are plenty of cultural values, connected with forest-based economic, social and environmental benefits and with sustainable management of forests, identified in the SY_CULTour pilot regions, namely forestry, charcoal-burning, water barriers for bringing down wood, woodwork, sawmills, carpentry, roof and shingle making, joinery, wooden ware, etc. In the framework of International Year of Forests Kulturno turistično društvo Lokovec organised the meeting of charcoal burners with lighting of the charcoal pile in Lokovec. In collaboration with Research station ZRC SAZU in Nova Gorica it published the book on charcoal-burning in western part of Slovenia.
