31st Idrija Lace Festival
Bobbin lacemaking has a special place in Idrija’s culture. It was documented in Idrija by the seventeenth century, and it spread to rural areas in the nineteenth century. A lace making school was founded in 1876 as a part of the Central Lace-Making Course in Vienna and it is still in operation today. Handmade Idrija lace has had a Protected Geographical indication since 2000.
The festival takes place annually the third weekend in June and is intended for locals as well as domestic and foreign tourists. During the festival is possible to participate in professional lectures, take part in lacemaking workshops, see exhibitions of Idrija and other types of lace, taste the special local dishes, join the competition in lacemaking and listen to the concerts in the evenings.
