Conference "Cultural values and tourism development in rural areas"
The SY_CULTour project, with special help of Heraklion Chamber of Commerce and Industry, is organizing an International Conference titled: »Cultural values and tourism development in rural areas«. The conference will be held in the Heraklion Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Crete on 17-18 of October 2013. The participation will be free of charge, however a preliminary registration is obligatory.
The conference aims to debate the way in which we see, think and undertake culture values and its management, policies and practices. Thus the goal is to bring together various stakeholders such as researchers, policy makers, local and regional representatives, and businesses in order to discuss how to bring economic and social development to less developed areas by utilising culture and responsible tourism. The conference will encompass keynote speeches, oral and poster presentations, parallel sessions and a study visit where the participants can share their knowledge on supporting the development of rural areas through cultural tourism.
The main topics of the conference are:
- Responsible tourism: managing culture and heritage in rural areas by the cooperation of all interested stakeholders;
- European, national and regional development policies for developing local initiatives and small-scale cultural tourism projects;
- Cultural tourism in rural areas: motivating tourists, marketing and branding.
The organizers kindly invite you to submit an abstract related to the Conference topics by no longer than 20th of May 2013 (extended date). The best abstracts will be selected for presentations and all the others reaching the needed quality can be presented in the poster exhibition.
A special interest is given to case studies presenting examples of more or less successful cultural tourism actions (such as examples where local inhabitants organised themselves and stepped together to be successful and to utilise cultural values for tourism purposes), especially in rural or less favoured areas across Europe as well as presentations concerning special issues on rural tourism and rural culture.

The conference is co-financed by the South East Europe Programme and the European Union.
