Sombor represents the largest city and the regional center of Western Bačka county, with almost 100,000 inhabitants. This area is a perfect example of Vojvodina's multiethnicity, for it is a home to more than 20 ethnic groups. Authentic rural architectural values, preserved farms (in Serbian “salaš”), green oasis, churches and culture of different ethnic groups living in the area represent a great potential and driving force for tourism development. Also, this area is known for special nature reserve “Gornje Podunavlje” that is a part of proposed transboundary Biosphere Reserve “Danube-Drava-Mura”. Cultural heritage, authentic rural ambience and protected nature in this area have not been used and promoted enough in the context of tourism development, though these resources represent a great opportunity for rural-cultural-eco tourism development.
